Best MCP Servers for Cursor (2026)

Cursor is the AI-first code editor: a VS Code fork whose agent reads your codebase, edits across files and runs terminal commands. MCP servers extend that agent beyond the editor's walls — querying your database, driving a browser for end-to-end checks, searching documentation or talking to project management tools. Cursor supports both local stdio servers and remote SSE/Streamable HTTP endpoints, so almost everything in the MCP Registry can be attached one way or the other.

Rather than browse twenty thousand registry entries, start here: every server below clears an objective bar — 10+ GitHub stars, 100+ monthly package downloads, or a verified official tier — and is ranked by stars, maintenance recency and downloads. No paid placement. Each entry links to its full page with Cursor-ready config.

A data-ranked shortlist of the 12 strongest MCP servers for Cursor — every entry links to its full page with copy-paste configs. List compiled 2026-10-28; rankings refresh as the underlying data updates.

How entries are picked: An entry is eligible only if it meets at least one of: 10+ GitHub stars, 100+ monthly npm/PyPI downloads, or a verified official/reference tier on its brand page; entries meeting none of the three are excluded, as are archived repositories. Eligible entries are ranked by a score built from: GitHub stars — multiplied by 10 when the entry has a verified official/reference tier, so official status counts as ten times the community traction rather than a flat bonus; maintenance recency (last push); and npm/PyPI downloads where available. Two tie-break rules keep the list honest: when the same repository is shared by several listings, its star count does not contribute to ranking (the shared figure would otherwise swamp independent projects), and when several implementations share a product name, only the highest-scoring one is listed — the others stay in the directory. Data comes from the public MCP Registry (description, install method), GitHub repository stats and package download counts — no editorial scoring, no paid inclusion, and sponsorship never affects these lists.

Connecting MCP servers to Cursor

Cursor manages MCP servers from Cursor Settings → MCP (or by editing mcp.json directly). Global servers live in ~/.cursor/mcp.json; a repository can ship its own set in .cursor/mcp.json, which is how teams share a standard toolbelt through version control. Each entry below shows the ready-made JSON — local servers take a command, remote servers take a url. After adding, open the MCP panel and flip on the tools you want the agent to use; a red status dot there means the server failed to start, usually a missing API key or a command that is not on PATH.

The shortlist at a glance

Full commands and configs are on each entry below and on the server's own page.

How do I add an MCP server to Cursor?

Open Cursor Settings → MCP → Add new MCP server, or edit mcp.json directly: global servers in ~/.cursor/mcp.json, per-project servers in .cursor/mcp.json. Every entry on this page shows the ready-made JSON block for Cursor.

Does Cursor support remote MCP servers?

Yes. Cursor connects to SSE and Streamable HTTP endpoints — in mcp.json a remote server is an object with a url field instead of a command. Entries marked remote-only on this page are remote endpoints; everything else runs locally via stdio.

What is the difference between global and project MCP config in Cursor?

~/.cursor/mcp.json applies to every workspace you open; .cursor/mcp.json inside a repository applies only there and can be committed. Teams typically put shared infrastructure (databases, docs search) in the project file and personal tools in the global one.

Why doesn't an MCP server's tools show up in Cursor's agent?

Two switches have to agree: the server must show a green dot in the MCP panel (it started successfully) and its tools must be enabled for the agent. If the dot is red, check the command path and any required API keys; enabling AI features per project can also gate tool use in some setups.
