Best MCP Servers for Claude Code (2026)

Claude Code is Anthropic's command-line coding agent: it reads your repository, edits files, runs commands and ships changes from the terminal. Out of the box it can search, plan and write code — but it cannot see your GitHub issues, query your database or drive a browser until an MCP server gives it that ability. That is what the Model Context Protocol is for: a standard way to plug external tools into the agent, with the server doing the work and Claude Code calling it through a config you set once.

The public MCP Registry lists well over twenty thousand servers, and most of them are thin wrappers or abandoned experiments. This page keeps only entries that clear an objective bar — 10+ GitHub stars, 100+ monthly package downloads, or a verified official tier — ranked by stars, maintenance recency and downloads. Nothing on this page is paid placement, and every entry links to its full page with the exact claude mcp add command.

A data-ranked shortlist of the 12 strongest MCP servers for Claude Code — every entry links to its full page with copy-paste configs. List compiled 2026-10-28; rankings refresh as the underlying data updates.

How entries are picked: An entry is eligible only if it meets at least one of: 10+ GitHub stars, 100+ monthly npm/PyPI downloads, or a verified official/reference tier on its brand page; entries meeting none of the three are excluded, as are archived repositories. Eligible entries are ranked by a score built from: GitHub stars — multiplied by 10 when the entry has a verified official/reference tier, so official status counts as ten times the community traction rather than a flat bonus; maintenance recency (last push); and npm/PyPI downloads where available. Two tie-break rules keep the list honest: when the same repository is shared by several listings, its star count does not contribute to ranking (the shared figure would otherwise swamp independent projects), and when several implementations share a product name, only the highest-scoring one is listed — the others stay in the directory. Data comes from the public MCP Registry (description, install method), GitHub repository stats and package download counts — no editorial scoring, no paid inclusion, and sponsorship never affects these lists.

Connecting MCP servers to Claude Code

Claude Code stores MCP configuration in its own config store, managed with the claude mcp command rather than a JSON file you hand-edit. The short version: run claude mcp add <name> -- <command> for a local stdio server, or claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url> for a remote endpoint — every entry below shows the ready-made command. Three things worth knowing: Claude Code speaks stdio and remote HTTP/SSE natively, so both kinds of server work; scopes decide where the config lives (local for this checkout, project shared through .mcp.json in the repo, user for all your projects); and servers that need credentials read them from environment variables you pass with --env.

The shortlist at a glance

Full commands and configs are on each entry below and on the server's own page.

How do I add an MCP server to Claude Code?

Run claude mcp add <name> -- <command> for a local stdio server, or claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url> for a remote one. Every entry on this page shows the ready-made command for that specific server, and claude mcp list verifies what is registered.

Does Claude Code support remote MCP servers?

Yes. Claude Code connects to Streamable HTTP and SSE endpoints natively — pass --transport http or --transport sse with the server URL. No proxy or bridge is needed, and headers for authenticated endpoints can be passed with --header.

Where does Claude Code store MCP configuration?

In its own config store, not in claude_desktop_config.json. The local scope applies to your current checkout, project scope is shared through a .mcp.json file in the repository, and user scope applies across all your projects — project scope is how you put a server set under version control for the whole team.

Why is my MCP server not showing up in Claude Code?

Run claude mcp list: entries marked as failed failed their startup health check. The usual causes are a missing API key (pass it with --env), a command that is not on PATH, or a server that only ships a transport your version does not handle — the page for each server lists what it needs.
