Remote MCP servers
4,082 servers in this directory run as hosted endpoints — you connect to a URL over Streamable HTTP (or the older SSE transport) instead of installing a package locally. They are grouped by category below; every listing links to a page with the transport, the provider and the client configuration.
Remote is not automatically better. A local server runs inside your machine with your own credentials; a hosted one sees whatever you send it, so the operator, the data it retains and the scope of the token you hand it matter more than the transport.
Before you connect
- Who operates it. A hosted endpoint is someone else's service. Check the provider and whether the listing is claimed by the publisher.
- What the token can do. Prefer read-only or narrowly scoped credentials, and revoke them when you stop using the server.
- What leaves your machine. Anything the tool call sends is visible to the endpoint operator. Treat private documents and credentials accordingly.
- Whether it stays up. Hosted services can change terms or shut down. A server you can run locally will keep working when the hosted one does not.

What is a remote MCP server?+
A remote MCP server is a hosted endpoint that an MCP client connects to over the network (usually Streamable HTTP, sometimes the older SSE transport) instead of starting a local process such as npx or uvx. You add its URL to your client configuration rather than an install command.
Do remote MCP servers need an API key?+
It depends on the server. Hosted services usually require an account, an API key or OAuth, while open endpoints may accept anonymous requests. Each listing on MCPNav shows the transport it uses; check the provider's own documentation for its authentication requirements before connecting.
How do I add a remote server to my client?+
Copy the server URL into the MCP configuration of your client. The install guides on this site walk through the exact file and format for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and ChatGPT.
Are remote servers safer than local ones?+
They differ rather than rank. A local server runs on your machine with your files and network access; a remote server sees whatever you send it, so the questions that matter are who operates it, what data it retains and what permissions it has. Prefer read-only scopes and revoke tokens you no longer use.
Why do some servers on this directory have no remote option?+
Many MCP servers are distributed only as a local package (npm, PyPI, Docker). Their pages show an install command instead of a URL. A server that offers both will list both transports on its page.
Directory total: 21,839 servers, 4,082 of them with a remote transport. Transport data comes from the public MCP Registry and is shown on each server page.
